I was born and bred in Hull, Yorkshire.
After leaving the city for another port, I have been on many expeditions since, living in Australia, Italy and Singapore. A nomadic human drawn to the real stories of real folk in my writing, but who also looks at the mythological and madness of made-up stuff. A storyteller at best.
An avid reader from a young age and into adulthood, from poetry and beyond, the shelves are never empty. Even the drive is filled with old scripts and new scripts from films that have inspired, Spartacus, Little Women, Hiroshima Mon Amour and Good Will Hunting. An eclectic taste essential to discovering films, books, music, and art that always shapes the script in some way.
Writing works include theatre, radio, film, and TV. Several bad scripts as well as alright scripts in the bag, continuously working on the good ones and editing to ensure the standard is of the best quality for the reader.
I have been working on a few productions, and a variety of roles have given me great experiences to navigate the world of independent filmmaking. It’s the toughest slog in all the lands I’ve been in, but it’s the one that brings me the most passion.
Vulcan
Nothing hits harder than life outside the ring. Jay chooses art over boxing, a rebellion that infuriates a father of fists.
This debut short film written, directed and produced by me, is Vulcan. Going back to your roots is always challenging and especially in this hard-hitting drama. It was extremely important for me to return to the streets where I grew up and where I first dreamed the so-called impossible dream, Hullywood.
Shot in late 2019, it will be very exciting to get this first short film out there, for all those involved it has been a momentous effort of local and hard-working talent. It will head into festivals in 2020/2021.
I work with lots of humans around the world and hope to collaborate on future projects that encapsulate the stories that are not so favourable, the other ones.
