I was always captivated by the art of storytelling; both reading and creating.
Most notably, stories of the past, or those which hold an importance that goes further than the stories themselves. After studying film theory for my undergraduate degree, I became interested in the way the stories in films can have an impact upon someone, and the power that this medium has. To shed light on an issue that has remained in the dark, or to bring back the past back to life, is something that has always intrigued me, as a writer and creator.
With a preoccupation with aesthetics, combined with a gravitation toward the darker side of life, my stories are subtle, very visual and often rather macabre; exploring the human condition in all its many (sometimes ugly) forms. I have always held a fascination with the past, something that influences all areas of my life, and this is very evident in the scripts I write.
Though film is the medium I am most at home with, I have also written for multiple other mediums including theatre and radio. I have co-written multiple productions, been a member of both cast and crew on others and am now about to take the step into bringing my very own story and characters to life in my short film, The Lament, which will be going into production in the Autumn, all things going well.
The Lament
When Cecilia loses her dear brother Edward, she relinquishes control of her own life in an attempt to bring him back to her. After receiving the tragic news of his passing the lines get blurred between where she ends, and Edward begins.
The Lament is a Gothic short film set in Bath in the late 1800s and will be written, directed and produced by me. The idea of the film came to me during the lockdown whilst wondering around Bath, the city I call home, a city steeped in history and a place I draw great inspiration from. I often visit ‘the Great Dell’, a location now central to my story. It is a former arboretum that looks straight from a Romantic Era painting; a beautiful, serene and slightly haunting place. Struck by just how quiet and deserted the city had become, there was a potent feeling of timelessness and the forgotten or unspoken pasts weighing heavy on my mind.
This inspired me to write my debut short film, a piece that I hope to use as a calling card to further my progression into an industry and artform I have always dreamed of being a part of, in whatever way that may be. To inspire, inform or influence even a small number of people with the stories and scripts I write would be a great accomplishment in my eyes.
